Prescott Evening Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, September 15, 1933, page 1, column 7 Death Beckons Louis Bernardi Louis Bernardi, 70 years old, proprietor of the Arizona hotel, 216 South Montezuma street, died at 5:55 o'clock yesterday afternoon after a long period of suffering from a complication of ailments. For five years he had diabetes but apparently recovered from it, but then followed hardening of the arteries, a stroke of paralysis a year and a half ago, several minor strokes, including one Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, followed by a condition of coma from which he never recovered. His death was expected momentarily. Several months ago it was thought he would have to have a foot amputated but he resisted the idea, bore the affliction and the pain stoically. Three weeks ago he fell and injured his hip. He was a man highly esteemed in the community. Acegilo, in northern Italy, was his birthplace on June 1, 1863. When 20 years old he came to the United States; 45 years ago he came to Arizona and followed mining, working for various periods of time at Poland, Jerome, Congress and Octave. Twenty-three years ago he settled in Prescott, for five years managed the Europe hotel, now known as the Grant hotel. The 17 years ago, he bought the Arizona hotel, which he operated up until his death. Mining was his hobby and he could talk on the subject for hours. In 1909, in Poland, Ariz., he married Flora Zoppa, who survives him. To them were born three children. Mary, 19, graduate of Prescott High School in 1931, is the only one surviving. Other survivors are a sister in France, Mme. Marguerita Calandra; two nieces, Mrs. Louise Bernard of 215 Garden street and Mrs. Juliette Marguillan, formerly of Prescott, now of Hollywood, Calif. Mr. Bernardi was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic church, where funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, followed by burial in Mountain View cemetery. The body was taken to the Lester Ruffner Funeral Home. See Also: Arizona Gravestone Photo Project |
