Howard Zehm Barke

Howard Z. Barke of Wickenburg died April 19 in Wickenburg. He was 77. Mr. Barke was born August 18, 1920 in Donnybrook, North Dakota. He had lived in Arizona for the past 19 years.

Howard Zehm Barke was born to Ruth and Christie Barke. He attended and graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1938. After a year of college, he taught Greenbush Township School in Ward County for two years.

Howard served in the Navy during World War II from 1942-1945. He was a radio man on a PBY in North Africa and England. After returning from the military, he continued his schooling at Minot State Teachers College in Minot, North Dakota, graduating in 1949. After moving to Minot in 1956, he worked for many years at First National Bank and later at Northwest Clinic. While living in Minot, he was active in the American Legion, Lions club, Toastmasters, and Vincent Methodist Church.

In October 1978, Howard moved to Wickenburg and started as a business manager at The Meadows. After leaving The Meadows, Howard worked for West Wick, Inc., and then moved on to Sonya Green Real Estate Brokerage, where he worked until the time of his death.

Howard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg. He also was a member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club and Elks Lodge 2160 in Wickenburg. In North Dakota, he was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife Luella Barke of Wickenburg; brother, Christie Barke of Fargo, North Dakota; daughter, Virginia Flegel of Washington; son, Randy Bare of Gold Beach, Oregon; and three grandchildren, Jessica and Cassie Flegel and T.J. Blake.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 27 at the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg. Pastor Jim Longstreet officiated.

Howard's family would like contributions to go to several charities: First Presbyterian Church Pre-School Scholarship Fund, 1890 N. Adams St, Wickenburg, AZ 85390; Sun Health Hospice Care Services, 12740 N. Plaza Del Rio Blvd., Peoria, AZ 85381; and the Wickenburg Rotary Club, P.O. Box 1018, Wickenburg, AZ 85358.

Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Services handled all the arrangements.
