Lucius Nelson (Ben) Butler

Dr. Lucius N. "Ben" Butler, age 94, died on January St" (sic: 8th), 2009 in Mesa, AZ. He is survived by his wife Gladys and children Nelson Butler, Wayne Butler, Norma Beckman, Rena Henry, Andrea Robinson; 12 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. Dr. Butler, a native Arizonan was born in the Phoenix metro-area on June 24, 1914. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School, then earned his DVM degree at Kansas State University in 1937. He began practice in Phoenix but was called to military duty in 1941 serving as a Major in the U.S. Army, Air Force Veterinary Corps until 1945. After World War II, he returned to Phoenix, AZ and established the Glendale Animal Hospital, a mixed animal practice facility. He served on the AZ State Veterinary Examining Board and was a past President of the AZVMA. He received an award for dedicated service to the Veterinary profession in 1982. He was appointed to the position of AZ State Veterinarian and Executive Director of the AZ Livestock Sanitary Board in 1960 and served in that capacity until retiring in 1979. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wed. January 14, 2009 at Melcher Mission Chapel, 6625 E. Main St. Mesa, AZ. Melcher Mortuary Mission Chapel (480-832-3500) handled the arrangements.
