Wickenburg Sun (Wickenburg, Arizona) Wednesday, February 21, 2024' p. A-6 Arlene Hefner, a 52 year resident of Wickenburg, died of natural causes on Feb. 11, 2024 at the age of 89. Born Arlene Krein, the seventh of eight children, in Wishek, ND, on May 29, 1934 to Katherine (Vossler) and Jacob Krein, Arlene graduated from Vancouver High School in 1953 and went on to attend Clark College. Arlene's early life was very unique. During junior high, she began tumbling. She was then recruited to perform with a troupe that toured the United States and Canada doing trampoline, ladder and acrobatic shows. The troupe would drive around the country pulling a trailer with their equipment and set up at fairs and rodeos. Some of the highlights of her career were meeting Jimmy Durante, Gene Autry, and Jackie Gleason as they performed on the Jackie Gleason Show. Arlene was also an accomplished dancer. She taught ballroom dance at the Grogan School of Dance in Vancouver. The combination of rodeo and dancing is what brought her and Ross Hefner together. Ross was a cowboy on the circuit and, when he and Arlene danced together, they could clear the floor. The two were married in October of 1960. The couple and their three children moved to Wickenburg in 1971. Arlene worked, managing the Wickenburg Pool for many years, but spent most of her time working in Ben's Saddlery, where she enjoyed working with leather and meeting people. Arlene is preceded in death by her husband, Ross Hefner; and her seven brothers and sisters. Arlene is survived by her children, Jay Hefner (Jolie Tecsi), Katherine Hefner and Troy (Kristina) Hefner; her step- children, Layne Hefner (Teeki) and Marsha Slay (Dave); her grandchildren, Kyla Hefner and Katie Hefner; and numerous step- grandchildren. The family will hold a celebration of life for Arlene on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Wickenburg Country Club (1420 N. Country Club Drive). All who knew Arlene and the family are welcome. |
